They had just put their children to sleep when shots rang out. The house they were renting in the only neighborhood they could afford to live had been riddled with bullets. Their 15-year-old daughter had been shot in her bed while she was sleeping. While this had been a case of mistaken identity, in an instant, this family’s life had changed forever. The young girl was rushed to the hospital and was able to recover from her wounds, but the family of five no longer had a place to live, their house having been torn apart by the drive by.

The family was living out of a hotel, but with dollars running short, quickly needed a safe and affordable place to call home. Within a matter of days, South Florida CLT moved them into one of their houses. Today, the Plunkett family is now preparing to purchase the home, working closely with South Florida CLT and its homeownership counselors.

When asked what this home means to them, “It means EVERYTHING. We know our children can go outside and play, and we can sleep and be safe at night. This program means a lot to us, and we’re sure it means a lot to other people also. It’s a great program.”
