SFCLT Receives $631,500 Grant for Affordable Housing in South Florida

The South Florida Community Land Trust (SFCLT) is honored to announce that we have been awarded a $631,500 grant through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta’s (FHLBank Atlanta) Affordable Housing Program (AHP). This transformative funding will support the acquisition and rehabilitation of 22 multifamily units in Dania Beach and Hallandale Beach, ensuring that these homes remain affordable for low- and moderate-income families in our community.

The AHP grant was secured in partnership with BankUnited, a member bank of FHLBank Atlanta. Loan financing for this project is being provided by BankUnited and Neighborhood Lending Partners, a Tampa-based community development financial institution (CDFI) dedicated to financing affordable housing and community development projects.

The grant is part of a broader effort by FHLBank Atlanta to expand access to affordable housing across 12 states and Washington D.C. This year, the program awarded over $55 million in grant funding to 66 affordable housing initiatives, collectively supporting the development of more than 4,200 affordable rental and homeownership units. SFCLT is one of only seven Florida organizations to receive the award.

This grant will directly fund the rehabilitation of 22 rental units as part of the SFCLT’s Blue Sky project. This effort reflects the organization’s broader strategy to acquire aging buildings, renovate them, and place them in the community land trust to preserve their long-term affordability in Broward County, where over 40% of renters are cost-burdened, spending more than 30% of their income on housing.

The total development cost for the acquisition and rehabilitation of these units is $6,203,950 and is being supported by a diverse funding base, including:

    • Broward County
    • Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency
    • United Way of Broward County
    • JP Morgan Chase
    • SELF (Solar and Energy Loan Fund)

“We are incredibly grateful to FHLBank Atlanta and BankUnited for their commitment to making affordable housing a reality in our community,” said Mandy Bartle, SFCLT’s President and CEO. “This grant represents a collaborative effort to address the housing challenges facing South Florida and allows us to ensure that more families can find a stable and sustainable place to call home.”

“The goal of the General Fund is to support a wide variety of affordable housing projects,” said Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta President and CEO Kirk Malmberg. “We are pleased to see these funds go toward bolstering SFCLT’s initiative to turn existing, aging buildings into sustainable affordable housing. We look forward to opening the General Fund program again this year to help even more projects come to fruition.”

Since its inception, FHLBank Atlanta’s Affordable Housing Program has provided more than $921 million in grants, creating over 138,000 affordable housing opportunities. SFCLT is proud to join this legacy of fostering sustainable, community-centered housing solutions.
